Over the last few years, Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature have passed a large number of laws that chip away at local control of land use, culminating in the passage of SB 9 in September 2021. SB 9 effectively eliminates single family zoning in California, allowing almost any single family lot to be subdivided into as many as 4 new homes. This will occur “by right,” meaning that the city is powerless to stop this and neighborhood input is meaningless.
In response, a statewide initiative is preparing to collect signatures to qualify for the November 2024 ballot. This initiative simply states that the state government cannot mandate zoning decisions on a local level, thus restoring local control to cities and counties.
This initiative will invalidate SB 9 and prior top down laws that dictate changes to local zoning. Among these laws is SB 10, also signed in September 2021, which allows up to 10 dwelling units to be built on one single family lot if it is near a bus or rail line or other “transit center.”
These laws represent legislative overreach. A citizen led initiative is the only way counter these laws. Please consider volunteering to help us qualify this ballot measure and protect our neighborhoods.
